I’ll be the first to admit that I do not love Halloween. It is not my favourite holiday. I probably haven’t looked forward to it for many years. I can find very little redeeming in a night that is focused on the scary and the evil and the dark parts of life.
But there is some sort of magic that blossoms when your three and one year olds are discovering a holiday designed for people like them – people who love to dress up and play pretend and eat way too much sugary junk. Once I got through the stress of trying to get home during rush hour, feed the kids, get them dressed, and snap a few pictures before they went trick or treating, Halloween suddenly became one of the happiest nights in recent memory. The weather completely cooperated, we finally had a home where we could hand out treats to precious little neighbourhood kids, and it the evening became an opportunity to meet and get to know a couple of my new neighbours. The boys were excited and polite and had just as much fun trick or treating as they did handing out treats at home when it got a little too late for them to be out. I loved Halloween.
In fact, you might even say that my Halloween was super.

Haha, I’m the opposite I think. I love Halloween. LOVE. But this year I never really got into the groove, the swing of things. Oh well. Next year! And the pictures are just too too cute.

You have a LOT going on in your life. I know that I would never be able to enjoy Halloween with that much going on in my life. I get stressed way too easily. But next year will be another “first” Halloween for you guys. How awesome with that be?

It really is fantastic to watch their faces light up! I thought about you on Halloween and hoped you had a good time with your friends, even though you were kind of skipping Halloween. xo

That pic of the boys in front of the steps, well, you need to frame that one, SO stinkin’ cute!!!!! And yes, it is a lot more fun with kids and cute costumes. And I adore your pumpkin with the moon and the stars, what a cute idea! Glad you all had a fun Halloween! :D
Laura O'Rourke says
Thank you thank you thank you! The problem with my kids is that I feel like I could frame almost every one of them. Speaking of which… we still haven’t mounted our framed photos yet since moving. Maybe I should get some printed.

My gosh your boys are absolutely adorable!!! Their costumes are super-duper! :) Glad to hear you had a nice Halloween with your family in your new home, and new neighborhood!
I myself enjoy scary movies- and fun scary things. Yet never was a fan of Halloween.
I did not start enjoying Halloween until I stated working as an early childhood educator. Then, and now with my own little one and Home DayCare Halloween is a day to teach young ones about hospitality, community and generosity. As well as just having fun with the opportunity to dress up and pretend to be whatever their imaginations come up with! (Or chose a super cute costume or them! Hehe )

I love how you say that Halloween is about hospitality, community, and generosity. One of my favourite parts of Halloween night was watching Cameron hand out candy to bigger kids once it was time for him to be home. He loved it and had such a great time handing out treats. I was so proud of him greeting people at the door and talking to them.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME. They are ADORABLE! I can’t believe how much your oldest looks like you. And, you had the good candy! I love Halloween as a mom. It’s a long day, and can be rushed, but so much fun.

I like how you said that we had the good candy. For me, the “good candy” are full-sized chocolate bars or the Russel Stover dark chocolate & coconut cream that I snuck from the boys’ bags. But we did have assorted mini chocolate bars in one bowl and gummies in the other. We gave one of each to each kid. I hope that kids thought it was good. :)

Oh it is not my fave either but the kids adore it. This year 2 were so busy they would not even pause for one second for pics and then it was dark. I love all the great photos you got! And I;m so glad you enjoyed yourself after all that stress!

My two didn’t want to stop for pictures either, but I might have yelled so that they would let me take a few. Sigh. I calmed down after I got a few snapped. :)

My husband and I took turns trick-or-treating on Halloween night. He loves that part, while I would much rather hand out candy. But he didn’t want me to miss out on the trick-or-treating part, so we switched. :) It was great to watch the kids trick-or-treat, but I could have easily stayed home and handed out candy without going out at all.

Those are gorgeous photos, Laura. So happy that you enjoyed your first Halloween in your new home. It sounds wonderful. It’s not my favourite holiday either, but my boys love it and there’s chocolate – so it’s not all bad, I guess. :)
