Cameron loves going places. He is enamored with the sights and sounds and new experiences. Every trip out of the house is a new adventure for Cam.
Man Errands
Every once in a while, Cameron’s Daddy takes Cam out of the house. They leave Mommy at home, and off they go. Together they get their coats on, get buckled into the car, and go… somewhere. Sometimes they go through a drive-through for a coffee and some breakfast sandwiches. Sometimes they go to Best Buy to grab an electronic that Dan needs. Sometimes they go get groceries.
No matter what they do when they leave the house, it is called the same thing.
A Man Errand.
As Daddy gets Cameron ready to go, they talk about how important these man errands are. They are going out and doing something only they, the men of the family, can do. Together they will tread off into the wilderness, slaying all the dragons that come their way, and getting things done. These errands are not for mommys. They are for men. It is a secret club – something only Dan and Cameron can share. No matter what they’re doing, even if they’re just picking up milk, they are doing something important; something special.
Together, my two men trek out of the front door, into that big scary wilderness out there.
Man errands are great. All of a sudden, often for the first time in days, I am alone. I can get things done or do nothing at all. And yet I know that my son is safe. I know that he is happy. It is one of the only times during the day when I am not needed. Cameron doesn’t need me. He is out. He is with his Daddy. He is having the time of his life. He is on a man errand.
And then, all of a sudden, there is a little rat-tat-tat of little fingers on the front door. Or I hear the doorbell. Or the front door just opens. Standing there are my men, one in the arms of the other. Their backs are to the wilderness. They stand on the threshold of safety, where Mommy is.
A smile spreads across the face of my son. He reaches to me. I take him.
And I hear about how much fun they had while on their man errands. I hear about all the adventures that they went on.
I hope that man errands never end. I hope that Cameron and Dan always have their secret club – the place they can go where Mommy doesn’t need to be. I hope that Cameron always knows that together with his Daddy, they can slay dragons.
