Canada vs America
Runner with Runner
Together Against Blood Cancer
The Dynamic Duel Canada vs USA Virtual 5K
November 8 – 15, 2013
Join the Race to end blood cancers with Greta from G*Funkified and Laura from Mommy-Miracles. These bloggers are challenging each other to see who can get the biggest team to run The Dynamic Duel Canada vs USA Virtual 5K. We are recruiting runners from all across Canada and America (and around the world) to join the race. To the biggest team goes the bragging rights !
If you have never run a virtual 5K before, you’ll be surprised at how easy it is. Just sign up, run or walk 5k any time between November 8th and November 15th, and post a picture of yourself with your race bib (that you will be emailed) and your time. Easy peasy! After the race is over, we will be mailing out medals to all the finishers (and maybe even some prizes too!)
The best part? All proceeds from this virtual 5k will go towards the funds that Laura and Greta are raising with Team in Training for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as they train to run the Run Disney Half Marathon in January.
So join us and let us know what team you’re running with! Team Canada (with Laura from Mommy-Miracles) or Team USA (with Greta from G*Funkified). (If you aren’t from either Canada or the United States, we’d love to still have you participate, although we probably cannot mail you a medal at the end of the race. Still, know that your race entry fee will be going to a good cause! So choose a team and run with us!)
How to Participate in this Virtual 5K:
Click here to enter the virtual 5K. Choose which team you are running with and leave your name, shipping address, and email address. Email your race fee ($20) to one of the specified Paypal email addresses. Once you have paid your race fee, we will email you your race bib. When you have completed the race, email your finishing photo to virtual5k@mommy-miracles.com. Please tweet about your race and share your photos using #TNTDuel.
Want more swag? We have a race shirt you can purchase too! Click here to see and purchase the Canadian version. (The default option is an athletic shirt but you can change the type of shirt if you are looking for a cheaper option. The profits from the shirt will all go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada through Team in Training). If you want the American version, head on over to Greta’s blog.
The final day to register is November 12th.
Be sure to share and post about your participation in this virtual race! We want to get the biggest teams that we can!

I’m going to write the same comment as on Greta’s post – can I sign up with both teams and run 10K? :)
Laura at Mommy Miracles says
Yes. I love you.

Is there a deadline to sign up?
I would love to participate!
Laura O'Rourke says
Yes! There is! I meant to add that before publishing last night but forgot. I believe it is November 12. I’ll check and update today sometime. And YAY! I’m so glad you’re on board!

I posted on a mommy board I am part of to recruit more runners in support of you and this great cause, the moms are interested in participating as well! :)

You are SO awesome! :) Thank you!

At the risk of asking a dumb question, can one do this “virtual run” in a gym on a treadmill or elliptical and still count?

Laura O'Rourke says
Yes! Absolutely! :) As long as you can calculate distance on it, then you’re good! (For this reason, your time is only important to symbolically show that you finished it but time doesn’t really matter otherwise. People can do it inside, outside, walking, running, on hills, or on a flat road.)

I have to say, I love you both but I’m totally on Team Canada. (Sorry Greta!)
What a great idea. How fun!

Well, Greta knows I think of her as an honourary Canadian, so I’d be sad to compete against her… but since it’s all for a good cause I am in too!

That’s so great! :) It is definitely all for a good cause and all in good fun. I’m thrilled to have you on the Canadian team. :)

ok, so I’m still confused (see also: sleep deprived).
so, for example…I can get a step counter thingie or something to that effect and count distance as I go, even if it’s only taking the dog for a walk, or walking with the kids around the block while they bike, or even 20 times up and down my stairs chasing the baby? Does walking count (I’m not a runner)?
I want to help/participate, but this virtual race thing is too much for my brain to compute today.
help a girl out!
;-)
(and then I will register, etc!)

Most people do a dedicated, timed 5km all at once – whether walking or running. Some will do it on a treadmill, others will plan out their route in the neighbourhood or track it while taking the dog for a walk (or run) – as if they were doing a race (start – walk or run – finish). However, if you want to just track walking a total of 5km while doing your daily chores, I don’t see why that would be a problem! :) That is part of the joys of being virtual. You can interpret this however you want to!

Go America! ;-) Love you to though, Laura!

Isn’t it a fun way to do things? You know what will be even more fun? Getting to hug her at the half marathon we’re both doing… I’ll hug her even if the Americans win this virtual 5K. ;)

I have a question also. Can I do this virtual 5k in conjunction with a “real” race because I am registered for a 5k on the 9th and I just don’t see any other time I will have time to run another 5k before the 14th. And I don’t see me running 2 5ks on Saturday since I haven’t run at all in like 6 weeks.
And I consider virtual races real also, but I couldn’t think of a better term. Maybe conventional? Maybe I am overthinking it? :)

:) Feel free to double up on your races. The goal of this virtual race is fundraising so we won’t be picky – even though I see you’re American. ;)
