I don’t know how you shop for the holidays.
I mostly do it online. As a Mom with very little alone time I simply can’t get all my Christmas shopping done with two little snoops riding shotgun in the cart and in the baby carrier.
Except, online shopping has become a little more difficult these days too.
On Black Friday, I spent the morning feverishly perusing the Internet for deals. I noticed a certain two-year-old standing beside the computer desk only when he said “I want that, Mama. Can I have that?”
So much for being stealthy.
I have done small gift runs to the commercial park or the mall more times than I can count. Sometimes it is with two kids in tow. Other times, I am desperately trying to carve in some shopping time between when my baby goes to sleep and when the stores close.
Each time I try to convince myself that it will be nice to get out of the house. I do so even when these evenings consist of dashing back and forth between stores, hoping not to get a desperate text message from my husband telling me that the baby has woken up, and speed walking so as to not be the last shopper in the closing store. But every time I get home, I find myself more harried and overwhelmed than when I left. Perhaps if I just slowed down and took a moment to savour a little (caffeinated) drink, these outings would feel a little more refreshing, but with all the money I am already spending on Christmas gifts, it is hard to justify that six dollar eggnog latte I am so desperately craving.
I’ve recently come across an iOS app that is perfect for these harried shopping trips. It takes advantage of the errands I am already running and gives me a little incentive to treat myself a little.
The most important thing to know about this app is that it pays you in real world money. The second most important thing to know is that because of its title, you pretty much feel like a Top Secret International Spy Agent (and therefore very suave and sexy) whenever you leave the house to run an errand complete a job.
Field Agent asks you to be a secret shopper and it pays you to do it. And because it is an app for your iPhone, you can use it whenever it is convenient for you, assuming there are jobs available.
I boot up Field Agent whenever I am out running errands. I won’t go out of my way to complete a job, but accept if I see one nearby. I have seen jobs available for my local grocery store, the drugstore, for Toys R Us, and for electronic stores.
I completed my first Field Agent job the other night when I was out Christmas shopping alone. The job was at a store in the same area, and it took me no more than 5 minutes to complete. When all was said and done, I was left with $5.50 in my account, which totally took away any guilt for treating myself to a coffee.
Field Agents earn a minimum of $2.00 per job, but some jobs can be as rich as $50.00!
I seriously think this is one of the coolest apps for Moms who will be out running errands anyway.
Field Agent Canada is recruiting new Agents country-wide. Becoming a Field Agent is as simple as downloading the app and completing an online profile. Agents are matched with jobs that best suit their background and location.
Because Field Agent makes me feel a little bit better about treating myself during this busy holiday season, I couldn’t feel good about it unless we could treat you too! Field Agent will give one of my reader-Agents a $50 Visa gift card. All you have to do is use the Rafflecopter app below to tell me your Agent score. You can get an Agent score simply by downloading the (free) app to your iOS device and finding it in the “Stats” section of the app. You don’t even need to complete a job to enter. Just download the app! (Giveaway open to Canadians only please!)
The small print: I was compensation to write a review of the Field Agent app, but as always, my opinions were not bought. I will continue to use the Field Agent app and hope you love it as much as I do!

This is awesome!! Makes me want to get a smartphone just for this!! (I’m still holding on to “I don’t want to be connecting to everything all the time” but it seems like I’ll soon be running out of that option)

This is such a cool app!

With some extra money, I would put it into my kids’ RESP, I always have trouble finding extra to put in there :(

My secret agent name would be Agent Cosmo and I’d pop the extra dollars in my son’s RESP.

I wish I could download the app but my ipod won’t let me, shucks, looks like a good one too… oh well…such a neat idea! but if I could the extra money could go towards our food bill or our water bill.
Laura says
Bummer. It is probably because it requires you to be connected to data while you’re out. You have to complete the jobs in store.

Wish there were more jobs close to my home, but alas no luck.
Laura says
Hi Vianna. I’m not sure where you live, but I know that there definitely aren’t always opportunities where I live either. I can check the app days on end without an opportunity and then there will be a day with 5 or 10 jobs available! Just keep checking, or contact Field Agent through Twitter or Facebook and find out if they ever have jobs in your area. I am very impressed with how well they interact with their followers!

I know. It is a shame that the app is only for iOS (apple). I saw on their Facebook page that they don’t have any plans to expand yet, but I am personally hoping that will change soon.

This is such a cool app! It almost seems like a too-good-to-be-true thing, but it’s not! I’d use the extra cash you like, for fancy coffees! Not that I’m not buying them now, but with this app I can buy them and not feel guilty.
Jodi says
Hmmm I think I would be Agent Y. Like from Men in Black but when ppl asked my name I would confuse them and just say Y.
Soozle says
I would be Agent S – simple :-) With the extra cash, I will scoop up something original from Etsy!
Sunshine G says
I think I would just be Agent. No last name required. And I would splurge on something nice – a movie night or a fancy lunch.
Janet says
My only wish is that there were more jobs in Alberta…I keep seeing posts form out east and wishing they’d pop up on mine!
I’m saving up all my Secret Agent money now to spend on my trip to Mardi Gras!!
Laura says
Truthfully, I’ve noticed that there are a lot of times when there is nothing, and then every once in a while a bunch of jobs pop up. My Mom actually had the app before I even knew about it and got rid of it because she checked a couple of times and there was nothing. This is why I don’t drive myself nuts looking for jobs. If I am out and there is a job, I’ll take it. If I have a free evening, I’ll check. But otherwise, I just accept that I won’t get many opportunities to take jobs because (at least right now) there aren’t always a lot of job opportunities.
So we might not have more apps than you. Just more blog posts! :)

Don’t believe the hype. The concept sounds good but the FA (field agent) fails to deliver. The app is buggy and support always seems to give you a reason not to pay. I will admit my mistakes, but tell me the truth and support your agents.
Laura says
Hi Julian,
Sorry for your experience. That’s a bummer. I haven’t experienced anything like what you describe but I hope that the Field Agent team will solve your issues.
