For a number of reasons, Valentine’s Day is much loved by me. As this is our first Valentine’s Day in our new house, I’m faced with two challenges to overcome: I have never done any sort of decorating for Valentine’s Day in our apartments, so our house is lacking that festive spirit, and I’m super broke, so I can’t afford many decorations. It leaves me longing for a way to add a bit of sweetness in our house to complement the month but feeling a bit unequipped to do so.
I came up with two really quick, simple, and cheap projects to do to add a few little touches of love around my house. Together, both projects cost me less than $30.
Dry-Erase Love Note
Prop this up on a shelf or hang it on the wall starting on Valentine’s Day morning with a little love note to everyone in your family. But don’t feel like you need to take it down! Keep it updated all year round so that you always have a reason to stop and think about what you love about your family.
You’ll Need:
- Frame
- Small amount of fabric (or paper) in a chic pattern
- Stickers
- Dry Erase Marker
- Scissors
Take the back off the frame and use it to trace the outline on your chosen fabric (or paper). Cut the shape out slightly smaller than your tracing so that your resulting cutout will be only slightly smaller than the back of your frame. Insert the fabric in the frame.
Decorate your frame with love-themed stickers.
Write your love-note on the glass with the dry-erase marker.
Love Garland
For a few dollars, you can make chains of hearts to spread across your entire house. I did this last year with twine and clothes-pins and construction paper hearts. This year, I tried something a little different.
You’ll Need:
- A stack of multi-patterned card-stock
- Ribbon
- Glue or tape
- Scissors
Fold the card-stock in half to cutout heart shapes.
Cut ribbon into small strips of the same size.
Tape (or glue) each piece or ribbon to the back of the hearts to connect them together in a chain. One piece of ribbon goes between two hearts.
Walmart provided me with a $50 gift card to #ShareSomeLove in preparation for Valentine’s Day. I chose to use that to purchase supplies for the DIY decoration materials. With the additional $20, I got enough chocolate and greeting cards to finish my Valentine’s Day preparation and make sure everyone in my family will wake up to a little treat and love on the 14th.

I just “love” the dry erase frame idea! I need to make one of those for around here to keep around ALL the time! ;)

Wow! These are some sweet {heart} ideas! I *love* them! The frame is a great idea because it doesn’t need to take up a lot of space, but it can sit right out in the open all the time as a pretty reminder of the love within your home! Great post! Happy Valentine’s Day (week)!

Very sweet! I love the dry erase board idea. We have a little dry erase message board that I use to write notes to the kids. Sometimes they write back. :)
